VSAT vs MPLS / VPN-IP / Frame Relay services

Strengths of VSAT:

•  More economical for a large number of sites.

•  Available anywhere.

•  Manage the network end-to-end.

•  Can provide asymmetric capacity optimized for the traffic of the customer.

•  Unsurpassed support for data and video broadcast/multicast. Files or video need only be sent once and all sites can receive it.

•  Can provide very high speed (using DPC/EE) to all sites at very economical rates.

•  Quick roll-out, not dependent on availability of terrestrial lines.

•  Very easy switching of all links to the backup data center.

•  Can even switch to a different satellite if needed.

•  Can provide a transportable quick-deploy VSAT station that can be installed quickly for temporary use. Useful for emergency situations or special occasions.

•  Best suited for a star network.

• More secure for every confidential data because VSAT Broadband IP is Private Network for customer.

•  Encrypted transmission between remote and hub.

Weaknesses of VSAT:

• Propagation Delay.

Because of distance between satellite and earth (36.000 km), then every transmitted package will have propagated delay 0,25 second before reach the destination.

• Not support for Mesh Configuration (any to any communication).

Strengths of MPLS/VPN-IP/Frame Relay:

•  Any to any traffic links

•  Suitable for Voice Communication especially VoIP

Weaknesses of MPLS / VPN-IP / Frame Relay:

•  Dependent on availability of terrestrial facilities

•  Last mile can be unavailable or take months to install

•  Many points of failure.

•  Takes long to fix problems, especially if the problem is in the last mile wire. Fixing a problem can take weeks.

•  MPLS/VPN-IP/Frame Relay service provider is dependent on another entity (carrier) for the service levels on the terrestrial line.

•  Only low speed lines may be available for some sites.

•  Not secure for every confidential data because not use Data Encryptor
